Want to make a beautiful ruffle clutch that's completely customisable? This girly inspired piece is the perfect added accessory for any outing!
One thing I LOVE about having the skill of sewing is that everything you want to make is a reflection of your taste and style. It's a form of self expression, a little part of you going into your creation. It's a state of zen, a form of complete and utter presence, your creativity flowing to be rewarded with a piece that you will cherish for a life time.
Todays blog will show you step to step on how to make your own Ruffle Clutch! So turn on your sewing machine, gather your pins and scissors and get ready for your next statement piece!
First Steps
I began by drafting my own patterns pieces using normal white paper. I did this by measuring a piece for the front top, front bottom, ruffle, rectangle for back and 2x linings.
Here are the measurements I used:
Front Top - 4" x 10"
Front Bottom - 6" x 10"
Ruffle - 20" x 6"
Rectangle for Back - 8" x 10"
2 x Linings - 8" x 10"
It's important to note that seam allowance wasn't added to the measurement so if you want the bag to be exactly 8" x 10" I'd recommend adding on the 1.5cm seam allowance either on the drafted pattern or around the edges of the material
Here is an example of two pattern pieces drafted and pinned to the fabric.
The Material
I used was 100% cotton (the polka dot) and calico (the white.)
Pink ribbon for edging on ruffle
10" one sided zipper
The Steps
Draft pattern and cut.
Pin drafted pattern pieces to material and cut.
Fold the ruffle right sides together and sew along either side of the rectangle (leaving the top open)
Fold the ruffle right sides out and press flat with an iron.
Pin 22"- 23" of ribbon along the closed edge of the ruffle and sew to attach.
On the open edge of the ruffle piece sew two basting stitches to the top of the fabric. This stitch is what will allow you to create the perfect ruffle!
Pull on the basting stitch to give you the desired ruffle for the clutch (do note that the ruffle needs to fit the width of the clutch)
With your now completed ruffle, pin it to the top of the front bottom piece and sew it into place. It is at this step that you can remove any of the exposed basting stitches.
With the right side facing down sew the top front piece to the ruffle. Make sure to iron flat.
Attach the zipper. Remember to add the lining in this step!
Sew along the three open sides and trim any excess material.
Turn the completed clutch inside out the and press flat with an iron.
Congratulations! You now have your very own personalised ruffle clutch!
I'll now attach some images of some of the steps for all my visual learners out there!

Can we just appreciate the beautiful rainbow in the first photo?! I went to the beach behind my house to take some photos of the end product and the first thing I saw was that perfect rainbow on the horizon. It's just a reminder of how beautiful our earth is and why we should cherish every small beauty it has to offer.
Until next time,
